Sickening Horror: The dead end experiment

29/09/09  ||  Lord K Philipson

My beloved sister Statik Majik asked me to review this piece and I think it’s becoz he’s once again created the actual album cover for the band at hand. Either that or he just thinks I don’t have better things to do. Ok, lemme pull out my cock and bitchslap someone in the face with it, I forgot where the fuck I was…

Watch out for the cock!

Ah… the cover… Well, it looks, eh… a bit LSD-ish. It’s got this very dark atmosphere to it, which is cool, but I’m not sure what it tells me as far as how the band might sound. I think the skulls in the water look a bit silly too – it would have been better without them. Nonetheless, a fine cover it is but I am not the biggest fan of it. I know I can expect more from Statik and his Leiskuva business – the guy is obviously a fucken fantastic artist, something all those The Project Hate MCMXCIX covers prove. Great to see he’s getting more and more work though. It’s about fucken time. And dontcha worry, he can take my praise as well as my honest criticism.

Whoa, here comes the cock again!

It just caught me… I believe that SH have been interviewed at this very site at some point (we are so productive it’s impossible to remember every little thing we do), and when I look it up it shows me I am correct. Those guys made a nice impression with that interview, so hey – that’s a start… What about the music then? I can’t believe it has taken me this many paragraphs to get to the actual music… I guess you could say I’m an asshole sometimes.

Double cock!

Brutal, semi-technical death metal with blasts and the whole titty-work. But SH actually throw in some weird guitar things and whatnot into the mix which make them come across as a band with a somewhat “own” touch to things, and that is something I always appreciate. Fuck knows too many bands sound the same so it’s refreshing to see some people at least try to do something more unique with what they are shitting out in the rehearsal room, though saying “unique” would be an overstatement in SH’s case. But fuck it, as mentioned – at least they are trying. And all this crap leads down to this: is the result any good then?

Somewhat.

It’s not bad, but not fantastic either. SH is kinda missing the target a little with their death metal assault on “The dead end experiment”. It’s all a huge , infernal and chaotic effort with a quite poor production where the drums sound fantastically thin and triggered. When I’m longing for actual songs and groove I get riff after riff after riff with hysterical drums and a complete mess of ideas thrown together. Somewhat impressive, sure, but nothing I can see myself getting into on a whole new level. There’s no denying these guys possess some talent and love for death metal, the brutal way, though. They fire up some fine aggression and intricate parts all over this piece and even though I won’t be spinning this in my iPod all too often, Sickening Horror know what they are doing though this kind of death metal is not really my preferred brand.

Triple cock!!!

Sorry SH, just becoz you guys were cool in the interview doesn’t mean I’ll fucken do the jig or the moonwalk on yer penises, but you are also too good to receive a good beating from yours truly.

A few days after completing this review I was actually sent the whole deal from the band or the label. So lemme just add that the booklet looks fine as well, but my opinion on the music stands, ofcourse. And some week later I see that bassist Ilias donated a few bucks for Torture Division’s music thru PayPal. That is just fucken beautiful and quite possibly just made me like them a bit more than I should, hah!
